This paper presents a study that investigates reduction of changeover times. Research and practice have demonstrated that changeover times can be considerably reduced through changes in the design of production equipment and parts. The most widespread method for reduction of changeover times is probably the Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED). Other applications are Design For Changeover (DFC) techniques, which address both design and organisational changes, in order to improve changeover performance. Group Technology (GT) is a scheme for parts grouping, machine dedication and shop arrangement, which reduces material handling and changeover times. The aim of the study outlined in this paper was to compare the changeover time reduction achievable through design changes only, with that which can be attained through design changes in combination with application of changeover sensitive heuristics (CSH).
